Here Is What You Need to Know About Roller Blinds

By   |
What are roller blinds?

So you have moved into a new home. Or perhaps, you've renovated your old one. And now, you are debating about what kind of blinds to use on your windows. Have you considered choosing roller blinds? Made mostly of stiffened polyester, and mounted upon a metal pole to add to the support, roller blinds are easy to use, and easy on the eyes. They are generally designed on the form of a large piece of the fabric, and can rolled up or down from one end.

Why should you choose roller blinds over other kinds of blinds?

Every kind of blinds comes with its own set of advantages. Here is what the roller blind has to offer to your home -

• These blinds are attractive - Roller blinds do not have slates or excess fabric. They come with a very simple design that is easy to use, and does not create a mess. These days, roller blinds are being made out of a variety of materials including translucent fabrics (which let the light in), sun-screening fabrics (which help to screen the sun's glaring rays and the ultraviolet component therein), and block-out fabrics (which do not allow much light through).

• These blinds are flexible - Most of the fabrics that are used in the making of roller blinds enhance the flexibility of the product. Also, since these blinds are designed in a manner that requires them to be rolled up and down, it is crucial that they are flexible. They are also flexible in terms of the purpose for which they can be used. For instance, depending on the material used, they can be used for letting the light in, acting a sunscreen, or for blocking out the light.

• They are easy to use - These blinds can be aided by a spring, operated by using a chain, or can be powered by a motor. In fact, motorized blinds can all be linked together so that multiple blinds can be closed and opened simultaneously. How cool is that! This also makes it easier to operate blinds that cannot be reached easily in case they are blocked by pieces of furniture in your home.

• These blinds are strong and durable - You will not have to make a replacement every few months. In fact, the ones that are of dependable quality can last for several years with very little maintenance. It is one of the important things to remember.

5 Important Tips to Choose the Right Roller Blinds for Your Homes and Offices!

By

Here are a few important tips to help you buy roller blinds:

1. Figure out your requirements

Depending on the type of home that you are living in, the area where it is located and ultimately the purpose that you expect it to serve, the type of window shades chosen will also differ. For example, if the location of your home is such that your rooms are receiving too much light, investing in thicker window shades to reduce the intensity might be your best bet.

2. Colour:

The market is flooded with several types of colours when it comes to choosing window shades. But, you have to choose what best matches the interior decoration of your house. Ideally, if your walls are light coloured opt for a darker shade and vice versa. You can also opt for textured patterns particularly if you want to highlight the window area.

3. Ease of operation

Roller blinds are a more urbane replacement to the traditional idea of curtains. Additionally, roller blinds are supposed to be easy to operate. Therefore, prior to making the purchase, don't forget to check their smoothness of operation.

4. Choose a good quality fabric

Several types of fabrics are used to make roller blinds. Use a little bit of research to understand which kind of fabric will suit your requirements in the best possible way. For example, the flame retardant fabric used in some types of roller blinds is extremely good if you want to increase the security of the premises. On the other hand, solar control fabrics are great for people wanting to control the amount of light entering the premises.

5. Should be easy to maintain

While choosing window shades, invest in an option that is easy to maintain as well as long lasting because you don't want to be spending thousands on getting your window shades cleaned regularly, do you?

What Roller Blinds Can Offer Your Home

Hunter Douglas
Moving into a new home and finding the windows bare is an exciting experience for any budding interior designer; it's a blank canvas ripe for decoration. When it comes to choosing your window decoration, however, things can start to get difficult.

Curtains or blinds? It's a question many homeowners have asked themselves over the years and it's undoubtedly a question many future homeowners will ask themselves too.

While many people, usually older, are dedicated to the old school decadence a good set of curtains can offer, blinds have built up a strong following among young people looking for a more cosmopolitan look and families with pets or young children.

After pledging your allegiance to one of the two major styles of window dressing there then comes the problem of choosing which style of blind or curtain you want to have in your home. Blinds in particular offer a vast range of different options, from opulent real wood venetian blinds to vertical hanging blinds.

One classic style that occasionally gets overlooked when it comes to home decoration is roller blinds, which are more traditionally associated with a cold office setting rather than a warm homely setting. However, this style offers plenty of benefits.

The beauty of roller blinds lays in their simplicity - they aren't particularly complex and don't owe themselves to elaborate design quirks. Instead, they offer a simple solution that just about anyone can operate. There's none of the oft confusing leverage and cord systems associated with other styles; they're just incredibly easy to use.

This simplicity means that rollers are often a cheaper alternative to other styles. Don't mistake this lower price range for lower quality however; rollers can serve all the functions of other styles just as effectively.

Roller blinds arguably offer more variety than any other style too, thanks to their simple design. The material of a roller can be customised with a variety of different colours, patterns and designs - your imagination is more or less the limit of what is possible.

Just want a simple blue block colour blind? That's fine. Elaborate snakeskin? That's fine too. Some retailers will even allow you to customise your blinds with your own images so you can be reminded of a wonderful holiday or a family day out every time you shut the world out for the night.

The lack of gaps in rollers also means they offer a degree of privacy that Venetian or verticals just can't. With the right materials, rollers can also possess a blackout quality that makes them ideal for a home office or an entertainment room.

However, roller blinds won't be the right option for everyone. Compared to other styles, they're relatively hard to clean and one well-placed spillage can stain the material permanently which means you'll have to replace it completely.

It could also be argued that rollers aren't as 'homely' as other blinds due to their practical nature and traditional role in an office environment.

Nevertheless, they still offer an excellent range of benefits. So if you're considering a new look for your windows, keep roller blinds in mind.

Revamp Your Home With Roller Blinds

By Stephanie Fandler

The very first thing people look at when they go into your home is your windows: this is usually because they are at eye level. Most homeowners realise the value of investing in good quality window treatments to really make their place shine. Whether you want something eye catching or just something simple, investing in roller blinds can not only help add value to your home, but also provide you with more privacy as well as blocking out the sun light. You may want to compose a list of what it is you are looking to get from your blinds before you choose what is right for you and your home.

Blinding Light - For some, having a room with plenty of sunlight is not always ideal. Those of us who work night shifts and need to sleep during the day can have no end of trouble trying to darken our bedroom. Roller blinds are available in a black out fabric which not only prevents the sun and daylight from getting in; it also stops your room from overheating. It is also a very useful way to stop young children from rising too early when the sun rises early in the summer months.

Matching - If you want to colour block your room as in having it all the same colour, you could have the blind in the same colour to match your room or with the right shade of fabric paint you could simply paint the blind or customise it to match. Some fabrics aren't suitable for this so it is best to check with the blinds company you buy from for best results.

Hunter Douglas
Professional - Make sure you only use a reputable and well known blinds company when having your blinds fitted. Shop around for different quotes so that you can build up a portfolio of options for yourself. Remember the dearest quote isn't necessarily the best quality blinds so try to do your homework and see if you can also get references from the company you decide to go with.

Dust Free - As many of us know, dealing with curtains means a lot of dust. In order to keep the dust bunnies at bay, we have to have our curtains regularly washed and this means a lot of hanging and re-hanging nonsense. With your roller blind, you can simply take a handheld vacuum to them and gently sponge them down with a damp sponge. This will keep the dust to a minimum and help to keep your house allergy free.

Value - The money you invest in your new blinds will be well worth it as when it comes to selling your home you will see how much value they add to your home. Roller blinds look need and keep the appearance of your house tidy, particularly when it comes to showing buyers around your abode. Also, from time to time companies have promotions and sales so it is possible to get your house kitted out at very affordable prices indeed.

Choosing Between Roman or Roller Blinds

Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Shades
Having blinds for your property is a great move in a vast majority of cases. Blinds give you many advantages over other kinds of curtains and shade, and this is largely because they are so versatile. The main great advantage of using blinds is that they give you a huge number of different 'settings' that can let in variable amounts of light. In other words you can opt to have your blinds completely open and let in a lot of light, you can decide to have your blinds partially open and to let in half the light you want, or you can opt to have the blinds drawn and shut out all the light. If you have netting behind them then this will give you even more options and allow you to have combinations of blinds and netting at various levels.

However even once you've decided that blinds might be right for you, there is still then the matter of choosing what kind of blinds you need. On the one hand you can choose 'roller blinds' and on the other you can choose to install 'Roman blinds' - but what's the difference?

Essentially roller blinds work on a kind of wheel - this allows you to roll the blind up so that it wraps around the reel at the top and thereby removes itself from your window and lets in the light. On the other hand, if you use Roman blinds then this will mean that the blinds fold themselves up as you pull the chord and that way disappear. When you pull up Roman blinds they will almost seem to 'crumple' in a pattern and this will have a similar effect.

Choosing between the two largely comes down to preference and there is little difference between them other than aesthetics. One thing that is worth bearing in mind however is that Roman blinds will not be able to be opened quite as wide (or more accurately 'tall') as roller blinds. This is because they have crumpled up at the top, but will likely still be too thick and thereby cover a small portion of the top of your window.

At the same time you might find that Roman blinds bulge out a little farther than roller blinds, meaning that they will need more space on the windowsill in order to work. They do however have the pleasant bonus of being quite aesthetically pleasing and perhaps a little more interesting to look at than the ore flat-looking roller blinds. This does make Roman blinds slightly more suited to perhaps a slightly more ornate or 'traditional' looking property, whereas roller blinds are possibly better suited to more modern flats and apartments.

Ultimately this decision is likely to come down less to whether you want Roman or roller blinds, and more to whether the pattern you want is available in that particular style. If you choose based on the pattern you like then you will find that for most uses it doesn't make too much difference whether the blinds are roller blinds or Roman blinds.

Both roller blinds and roman blinds are effective at blocking light and the view. In some cases though, you can get a more stylish look with roman blinds.
