Every Homeowner Should Know The Fundamentals of Window Treatments

When it comes to window treatments, there are several things anyone thinking of updating their windows needs to know. You are about to learn about the latest trends in window treatments, blinds, shades and shutters. This article will also cover some major considerations to think about before making a choice and lastly, we'll cover the major window treatment categories to improve your knowledge on the topic. By following this guide, you'll avoid the headaches and pitfalls that many make when updating their interior.
We will start by talking about the latest trends in window treatments. There are several small trends but two major ones seem to have the majority of interest. From the point of view of overall looks clean, sleek, and simple lines are in fashion. The overdone gaudiness of decades past is long gone. You will want to make sure your blinds, shades and shutters don't scream 1960.

Another major trend as of late is the move towards going green. As the environmental movement enters the mainstream, more natural materials are being made available for use on and around windows such as bamboo, wood and reeds. Those are the basics of the latest top trends. We will now cover what key things to think about before you purchase new window treatments.

There are some major factors that will determine your purchase. There will be many minor things to consider as well. However, we will only cover the two major factors to think about before buying in this article. The first major factor that must be considered is how much privacy you want your shades, shutters, and blinds to provide. Congruently one will need to consider how much outside lighting is needed in the area.

These things will of course vary by room as bedrooms need more privacy than living rooms or kitchens. One must also note to what degree energy efficiency comes into play when making a choice. Windows are notoriously weak areas for heat loss and gain. Nowadays, you have window treatments that offer considerable insulation value to help with your heating and cooling bills should you need that. Now that we have covered some of the basics, let's cover the two categories of window treatments.

There are two classifications for window treatments. The two main classifications are generally referred to as "hard" and "soft." Hard refers to things that look hard to the eye such as roller shades, wood blinds, and mini-blinds. These items are the portion of the treatment that generally go right next to the glass. Soft refers to things the eye would perceive as being soft. This would encompass all of your fabric treatments whether they are functional or decorative.

Now that your knowledge of window treatments, blinds, shades and shutters has been added to, you'll be better prepared during your next interior upgrade.

Dressing your windows is no small task. There are many professionals available to assist you with designing and installing blinds, shades, and shutters that are appealing and functional. Window Dressing Wish Lists Can Make Your Dreams Come True

When I sat back and considered what type of window dressing I wanted for my newly decorated living room, I decided that I needed to be logical and not let my heart rule my head - so many times I think of wonderful ways to up-date my home, only to find out that my dreams are dashed as the things I choose aren't practical and don't really give me what I'd imagined!

Making a list is said to be the best way to consider all aspects of what you'd like and what you need; there's a distinct difference between the two, or so I thought. So with pen in hand I mused and pondered and came up with a 'wish list'. The window dressing had to be practical, functional, stylish and affordable..oh and I also needed privacy as I'm sick and tired of people staring at me - it makes me feel like a goldfish in a bowl and sometimes I just can't resist the temptation to wave, that soon sends them scurrying off!

I also read that blinds, vertical and Venetian styles in particular, had been proven to reduce the risk of being burgled; apparently because the thieves can't see inside your rooms they can't tell if anyone's home or not, they are also unable to see what quick sale (on the black market) items you have, so they tend to move on and find another poor unsuspecting household. So that's another positive added to my 'wish list'.

Colour, that's also important, I want something modern but not too garish or gaudy. Natural materials, to help ease my carbon footprint conscious a little would also be nice. With my 'wish list' growing longer I began wondering if I should start crossing things off, surely no window dressing would make my 'wish list' come true. How wrong can you be?

I discovered that dreams can come true if you choose blinds as your window dressing. I decided that blinds would tick off everything on my 'wish list', surely there must be a snag, I asked myself. But no, with the fabulous range of blinds available you can select the style, colour and design you want for any given room in your home.

Hunter Douglas Chalet Woods
I settled for a the most gorgeous wooden blinds in a natural colour tone that compliment my furniture beautifully. They provide me with much needed privacy, although I can see out nobody can see in! My other half is quietly pleased about the security aspect, and with easy wand controls the slats can be tilted to create different diffused lighting effects (now that wasn't on my wish list), as well as being able to close the slats completely at night. There was also the added bonus of being to pull the wooden blinds to the top of the window if I wished to give me an unobstructed view outside, and of course it means I can clean the windows easily.

The next time you can't decide which type of window dressing you want make a 'wish list' - dreams can come true!

The Many Types Of Shutters

Adriana Noton on February 7, 2012

Norman Woodlore Shutters
Shutters is a term to describe objects that are present in many different industries and fields. For example, optics, windows and acoustics. Though this term is very inclusive, perhaps one of the most well-known references is windows.

In acoustics, a swell shutter may be referenced. This type of shutter is simply a flap. It is made to control the air that goes through the pipes of a pipe organ. In optics, shutter may be associated with numerous things. In photography specifically, it is a part of a camera that controls exposure. It does this by regulating the amount of time and light allowed into the camera. The shutter in a movie projector interrupts light that is emitted when a film is moved to the next frame. The light cast by theatre lights is modified using what is called stage lighting shutters. This term may also be used to define the structure that is able to manipulate the pulses of light in signal lamps.

These special window coverings are stable, solid coverings. Generally they are included within a frame that has horizontal rails or vertical stiles. Solid panels, louvers, fabric, and glass are other customizable options. These window coverings are made for indoors and outdoors and are usually placed over windows, though they can be added to doors.

Installment of these structures may be done for various reasons. In some cases they are used for privacy. Other times they offer protection against weather. When indoors, they can control the amount of sunlight in a room. These may also be installed simply for design and aesthetic reasons.

In general, interior models are attached to the sides of a window and can be swung open to allow for more light or window access. There are many ways these structures can be customized. Their wood and synthetic base can be stained or painted. Louvers, both stationary and movable, may be added. Recessed, flat or raised panels are another option. To add a special mark, tinted glass or fabric inserts may be included. Plantation, California, multiple tier, full-height, single tier, cafe and traditional are common styles.

In the past, exterior models were used solely for controlling natural light, offering privacy and protecting against weather and other natural elements. Nowadays, they still may serve these purposes, in addition to adding curb appeal to a building or home. Some examples of common exterior styles: board-and-batten, PVC, hurricane, composite and non-functional. These units are made from durable products that can withstand outdoor elements, such as Honduran mahogany, Spanish cedar, teak, and other hardwoods.
In areas where hurricanes occur often, hurricane coverings or shutters are installed. These have been designed to protect homes, buildings and structures from damages related to these natural occurrences. Specifically, they are relied upon to keep windows from being broken from debris. Generally these are constructed from iron, wood, fiberglass, high-resistance plastics or aluminum.

The term shutters is inclusive of a variety of objects, in many different industries. A common reference is to the coverings used on windows, called window shutters. These units may be added outside or inside of a building to protect it, control light, offer privacy or add to design.

What To Look For When Choosing Blinds

Adriana Noton

Hunter Douglas
Many people are used to seeing curtains as window coverings but the trend of late is blinds. There are so many options to choose from and they are a great solution to provide privacy as well as insulation. They can add character to a room and with the variety of materials they come in they can match any decor.
This option can be custom made to fit any sized door or window. They are affordable and attractive giving a space a finished look. There are different styles to choose from that include Roman, mini, roller, vertical and Venetian.

Venetian blinds, also called horizontal blinds, have horizontal slats constructed with a cording mechanism to operate them. They move up and down to be raised or lowered to accommodate any lighting situation or they can be opened or closed for privacy. They are great for blocking light, whether it be natural or artificial. This style was first noticed in Venice in the 1790′s and since then they have become a popular fixture in homes around the world. They allow one to see out without pulling them up. They are made from wood, vinyl and metal slats in a choice of colors.

Vertical blinds are like Venetian except their slats are vertical as opposed to being horizontal. They cannot be pulled up and down but only opened or closed. They provide privacy and block light and are made from many different material such as fabric, vinyl and wood in many colors. They can be pulled open from side to side for a full open look or turned individually to allow light in or keep it out. A good application for this type of blind is on French Doors or large expanses of window as well as casement style windows. For homes with low ceilings a vertical blind can add height and they allow for good air flow. They can be made to match the decor of any room and can look very elegant.

Roller blinds are usually made from wood and they work on a mechanism that rolls the material up and down as required. They work like shades and come with a retraction system in a single piece and decorated with hems to work with any decor. Some are meant to be sunscreens primarily, some can be made from translucent material to allow in filtered light and some are meant to darken rooms completely. They can protect a home’s carpet, drapes and furniture from fading. They are excellent on patios, in kitchens and offices.

Venetian blinds are a classic standard that have horizontal slats with a cording mechanism for operation. The can be pulled up or down and opened to allow in light or closed for privacy. They are excellent at blocking out light. In the 1790′s they were first seen in Venice and have since become a popular addition to many homes and offices and come in metal, wood or vinyl.

Horizontal or Venetian blinds are horizontal slats that have a cord for operation. They can be raised or lowered and opened or closed to allow in any amount of light one wishes. They are often used to block out light and were first seen in Venice in the 18th century. They are now popular the world over and come in a variety of materials to match any room such as metal, wood and vinyl and in a variety of colors.

Finding the right solution is a matter of figuring out the style of window one want to cover, the light that comes into that space and the control one wants to have over it. There are a variety of choices to select that allow for any situation. The end result will be a finished look that provides privacy and protection.
