Curbed.com:: Lakefront Mansion
An Immaculate Côte d'Azur-Inspired Lakefront Mansion
Location: Palm Beach, Fla.
Price: $14,250,000The Skinny: Palm Beach, that famed rich man's winter haven, has its fair share of opulent mansion, so many that this one, recently listed for $14.25M, is somewhat run of the mill. Even that high price tag isn't going to break any records on this slender Florida island and (heaven forbid!) it fronts on the lake rather than the ocean. Still, the house and 0.83-acre grounds appear immaculately maintained and any sort of waterfront is something to brag about in these parts. With four bedrooms for the owner and guests, two staff bedrooms, and five baths, this inspired estate could use an updated interior, but the current owners should be forgiven for the dated decor: they've owned the house for 24 years.

How to Choose Roman Blinds
![]() |
Hunter Douglas Alustra® Collection |
If you are looking to spruce up your home, one decoration well worthy of consideration is the installation of roman blinds. An elegant addition to any home, they are very affordable and extremely easy to maintain. Many people prefer the look and feel of fabric coverings to their windows, but do not want the hassle that often comes with them. It is here that roman blinds can really some into their own. They give the elegance of fabric coverings with the ease of operation that come with solid blinds. They are constructed of flat panels of fabric and, coming in an infinitely wide range of colors, can be found in many textures and materials and can thus be found to suit any room and any decor. Despite the wide range available, their easy construction makes them extremely affordable. And whilst costs can of course escalate, even the most personal of roman blinds are within reach of most budgets. The first decision however is to decide which type of blind to go for. There are two styles; one which draws up horizontally, the other which drops down in teardrop fashion. For more formal areas, the horizontal form is better suited of course; being a cleaner finish. However, in reception areas excellent looks can be achieved with sheer materials being particularly elegant. To ensure you get the best look for your home, it is advisable to spend some time looking at show displays in stores and, possibly, how other people have worked roman blinds into their homes. However, it is of course your personal preference that should really be the driving force. When making your decision it is important of course to consider the windows that you will be framing with the roman blinds. In kitchen areas for example, where these blinds work particularly well, the horizontal type is far better suited. Easy clean fabrics are available for such areas; which will soon prove their worth as inevitable splashes occur! For French windows, and wide picture windows however, you will most probably find that the teardrop blinds will be a better choice; allowing the panorama to be better seen from the inside looking out. The textures of the blinds can be matched to suit the rest of the furnishings in your home. For many of course, this may at first seem problematic; particularly if you have tailor made your furnishings. However, if budget allows, custom orders for roman blinds can be easily commissioned to get the finish you are really looking for. There are of course readymade sets of blinds which can be installed quite easily and effectively by you. This is of course the cheapest option, and a great look can readily be achieved. For rooms such as the kitchen, (that are decorated in muted colors), this is particularly the case. But really, there is no limit to the look you can achieve with roman blinds; with textures ranging for the easy wipe styles already discussed, through wispy satiny effects, right through to leather look and feel affairs. |
